Descripción General de la Travesía:
Esta es una travesía abierta a personas con/sin experiencia. Es obvio que haber ya hecho una travesía similar ayudar y saber algo de kayak ayuda mucho más. Sin embargo por la dificultad del río y el grado de control en la seguridad que se tiene en el viaje es que pueden participar aquellos que esten dispuestos a aprender rápido y tener una hermosa y diferente experiencia en la naturaleza.
El campamento es a orilla de río y el lugar cambia según como vaya el desplazamiento del grupo y los kilómetros que vayamos cubriendo. Tratamos de tener las mayores comodidades y comidas agradables a todos. El bote que transporte todo y nos da apoyo en la travesía es un gran acierto y nos permite traer equipo que hace de nuestro campamento un lugar agradable.
En lo personal es importante traer una carpa, buen saco de dormir y colchoneta. El resto todo lo proporcionamos nosotros.
Descripción General del Río Maule:
El Maule es un río que sorprende a todos los que hacen este viaje. Esta lejos de los caminos principales y se aleja de toda zona urbana grande. La señal telefónica desaparece y nos envuelve un entorno natural muy especial. El río tiene tramos lentos donde remar a un ritmo constante y parejo se hace muy importante.El río tiene desniveles en donde la corriente toma velocidad, pero sin crear rápido grandes, más bien corrientes fuertes que en partes son poco definidas y podrían hacer que alguna embarcación se de vuelta. Esto es parte del viaje y lo bueno es que no hay lugares de riesgo. Además con los guías y bote de apoyo todos los rescates se hacen fáciles y rápidos. Lo importante es un buen espiritú y equipo personal (ropa) adecuados.
ITINERARIO:
– Día 00. PUNTO DE INICIO. Esta Travesía comienza en Talca. Sin embargo para salidas con grupos desde Santiago se puede incluir el traslado en vehículo desde oficina Grado Sur Expediciones en calle Pucará 4313 A Nuñoa, Santiago. Es necesario una noche en Talca para iniciar el viaje temprano al proximo día.
– Día 01 INICIO TRAVESIA
Por la mañana después de un buen desayuno, viajamos hasta el sector de Curtiduría para iniciar el recorrido de 2 días hasta el Pacíficio. El total de kilómetros a cubrir durante el día son 35 app. Las aguas se mueven lentamente aunque nos sorprenden de cuando en cuando alguna corriente fuerte que de pasarla bien nos ayuda a aumentar nuestra velocidad de viaje. El campamento debería ser a mitad de ruta, o donde la tarde nos encuentre.
El almuerzo también es a orilla de río con una parada de 1 hora app que nos permite descansar, compartir y al equipo de apoyo preparar una rica pasta para reponer energías.
– Día 02 PUNTO DE TERMINO :
Desayuno a las 8am en campamento. A las 10am esperamos estar retomando la travesía por el Maule por unas 2 horas. Compartimos un breve almuerzo a orillas de río. Si todo va bien, la travería debería terminar en Constitución unas 3 horas más tarde – 3 o 4pm. Si vamos un poco atrasados, La Piedra del Lobo nos marcará la salida anticipada pero lógica, e igualmente hermosa, a solo 9 kmts de Constitución.
De Constitución viajamos de regreso a Santiago no sin antes disponer de tiempo para cambiarnos ropa, ordenar todo nuestro equipo personal y de Grado Sur Expediciones y comer algo. Si todo va dentro de lo planificado, siempre hemos llegado a Santiago alrededor de las 23 horas.
Nota: La travesía será apoyada desde el agua por un guía en un kataraft con motor. Aquí irá la carga extra, equipo de camping, equipo de cocina y comida.
QUE TRAER:
Lo ideal es venir preparados lo mejor posibles para el frío y aguas frescas.
– Primeras Capas
– Traje de Neoprene (Surf)
– Corta-vientos (impermeable)
– Buen zapato de goma para agua (zapato de surf o algún otro deporte similar)
– Buen equipo de camping PEQUEñO o compacto (carpa, colchoneta saco 0 Grados)
– Bolsas Secas para guardar ropa, saco de dormir (hasta bolsas de basura de buena calidad sirven)
– Gorra para el sol Lentes de sol y bloqueador
– Buff o gorro lana o similar en caso de frio
– Quizás algún tipo de guante de agua (en inglés les llaman “warmers”)
– Ropa abrigada para acampar en la noche
– Repelente de mosquitos
– Linterna Frontal
– Artículos muy compactos de aseo (champú, jabón, toalla multifibra, papel higiénico en bolsa seca, etc)
– Snacks de preferencia (barras, frutos secos)
– Botella para agua de preferencia un termo (sirve para llevar agua fría o agua caliente según el clima)
– Botiquín pequeño en especial si toman algún medicamento. Algún anti-inflamatorio.

General Description of Trip:
Down the Maule River in a Sea Kayak in 2 days is a fun trip and very interesting. The Maule river is a surprise in beauty. It is rather isolated from main roads. You only see small trails, rural dirt roads and small communities such as our favourite González Bastías and our friends from there.
The river is safe and when water level creates spots with fast moving water, even the inexperienced kayaker does not have problem negotiating the current. Even flipping and swiming has very low risk. Support Boat tough make the whooe trip easier and safer.
We camp one night along the river. We have our favourite places, but anywhere along the river is good for a camp ground. JUST LEAVE no garbage.
The river moves at a nice pace, so paddling without big effort allows a regular paddler to cover the distance bewteen Curtiduría and Cosntitución in two days.
The last stretch of the trip could be a bit tougher considering that the rivers flatters, no current and ocean wind might flow inland.
Maule River – Beautiful
The Maule river has a surprising and unexpected beauty. Far from main roads it is naturally protected from big crowds and big urben centers. Phone coverage is minimum and we only see birds, small farms and maybe a another local rowing boat. The rivers moves at different speeds. Some sections are flat and paddling becomes harder, and other sections have constant current and the kayaks move fast with little effort. Also, rain and volume of water of Maule Lake way upstream in the mountains affect the water volume in different times of the year.
With more water the river is clear and it moves fast. With less water, small current differences appear, but basic navegating kayak skills are enough to get though.
We welcome people without experience, because in an hour somebody could get what is needed to kayak the Maule river. What is important here is positive spirit and the right guiding and appropiate.
ITINERARY
– Day 00 STARTING THE TRIP. For most trips people need to be in Talca (hostal) the night before to start the trip on the following morning.
For scheduled trip, mostly from Santiago, we offer transportation to Talca as part of the trip from our Grado Sur Expediciones Office on 4313 A Pucará, Nuñoa, Santiago.
– Day 01 Paddling the River
Early on the following day, we have a good breakfast to get us through the morning.
We drive to the put in where guides and gear are ready for us and for this trip. Historically we start this 2-day trip in Curtiduria, just by the train station because from here down the river is friendly and we can garantee the arrival in the Coast in 2 days.
To start the day, we spend 1 hour with eqipment, personal items, loading kayaks, safety talks and for those with little experience the basic instructions on how to handle a paddle, how to use a ratter and few other tips to make the trip as safe as possible and the paddling the most efficient.
Our first stop is the small and «cute» town and train station Gonzalez Bastias. Here we get out of kayaks and visit a local family with a nice restaurant and the BEST FOOD along the valley.
The stop takes about two hours. Enoiugh to rest, stretch and prepare the bodies for another 3 hours kayaking to our camp-ground about 20 kmts doew river.
We paddle without stopping anywhere unless it is necessary. We taking time to enjoy the views from opur kayaks.
Once in our camp-ground, guides deal with main equipment, camping gear, dining-room tent and dinner. Expedition member deal with their own gear, their kayaks and safety equipment and the pitching of their tents.

– Day 02 Paddling Trip End in Constitucion
Guides get up early and start working on breakfast, while we expect expedition members to start working on their gear, packing tents, and the early loading of their kayaks.
Breakfast is usually at 8am so we have enough time to pack and start paddling not later than 10am.
Kayaks and one guide resume the trip, while support engine boat stays to pack the camp-ground. It takes an extra 30 minutes.
After 3 hours, groupm should be able to spot the famous «Piedra del Lobo» an outstanding rock in the middle of the river that tells everybosy that it is lunch time, and that we are about 8 miles (11 kmts) from our final destination.
After 1 hour in our pinic-style lunch, group paddles on but now knowing that a bit of ocean wind might challenge the moving forward. However, the river turns many time and creates protected areas and the kayaks still move fast.
The arrival in Constitucion is espectacular. We paddle along the coastal walking boulevard of the city and we get the welcome of many people. We also get welcome by other boats that move around the harbor either fishing or with other kind of work.
We look for our place to get people, kayak and gear out of the water and into our vehicles and trailers.
We have a place where people can change clothes and after getting a bite we hit the road either back to Talca or all the way to Santiago.
NOTE: All our kayak trip are supported by a motorized kataraft that transport food, gear, and all the items to make this trip as comfortable as possible and still keep it as an adventure.

– If weather is going to be cold Dry suit or wet suit can help (Not mandatory)
– Wind stopper – Rain jacket
– Good river shoes. Comfortable and shoes that allow you to walk around. Flip flops dont do the job.
– Camping Gear. Tent matress and sleeping bag.
– Dry bags for clothes and for sleeping bag mainly.
– Baseball hat glasses and sun block
– water gloves to avoid blisters and in case or cold days to keep hands warm (warmers)
– Warm clothes for the camp-ground time
– Mosquito Repelent
– Head Lamp
– Toileteries (towel, toilet paper, others)
– Snacks and power bars
– Water bottle ideal for hot and cold drinks.
– Medications that you regularly use. Pain killers, and antihistamines in case of allergies to food or bites.
