I. DAY BY DAY Itinerary:
Saturday / Day 1: Meeting in Puerto Montt. Start Biking trip in Contao to Hornopiren.
Participants for this trio need to be in Puerto Montt ready to travel with gear at 9am. We can pick you up or ask you to meet us at a especific location depending on where you end up staying. In our vehicles we drive to a small town of Contao where the biking trip starts all the way to Hornopirén. The route is beautiful with a combination of dirt and asphalt. It is longer than the main paveroad, but less hilly, safer with way fewer cars and the views are more espectacular. We ride our bicycles along the coast, through small ports and fishing villages.
The riding takes us to Peninsula Hualaihué, where our support team will have lunch ready for us. If weather is good we eat under the sun. If we have rain or it is too cold and windy – always a chance in this oarts of the world – we eat indoors.
After lunch we ride on. It is 25 kmts – 15 miles – until we reach our destination, Hotel Hornopirén in the town of Hornopirén.
Dinner at Local Restaurant
Night in Hotel Hornopirén
Sunday / Day 2: On Boat through Fjords to Caleta Gonzalo Port.
Breakfast. Bimodal – FerryBoat. FRom Hornopirén on a boat it is 4 hours as a pasangers. WE have our support vehicles and bikes with us on board, all the way to Caleta Gonzalo where we hit our road again and start riding to Chaitén.
Lunch on board ON YOUR OWN. Suggestions to bring snacks and water.
Available on board sandwiches – pizzas – sodas – coffee – tea.
Once we disembark in Caleta Gonzalo, we will have some 30 minutes to change clothes, use bathroom at the local facilities before we start riding to the town of Chaitén – about 60 Kmts to our hotels. The road has some elevation challenges, but for most part of the way it is fairly friendly. Part dirt part asphalt.
Half way to Chaitén we will set up a hydration station for all the cyclists with drinks and some food.
Dinner ON YOUR OWN. Suggestion Local Pizza Parlor.
Night at Los Canelos Lodge & Las Tranqueras Lodge.
Tuesday / Day 3: From Coastal Town of Chaitén to Villa Santa Lucía
Breakfast. At around 10am we leave Chaiten on our bikes aiming for the heart of the Andes Mountains. This section of our trip is not too demanding physicaly but it is long. 75 kmts all the way to Villa Santa Lucia. The road is completely paved what makes the traveling faster and comfortable.
We stop half way in Puerto Cardenas for lunch. This is a beautiful spot right where Lake Yelcho ends and Yelcho River starts. Lunch cooked by Grado Sur support team.
After lunch, and with enough time to rest a bit, we get back on our bikes to cover the last 32 kmts to our final destination. From here on, the terrain has more elevations with a 3,0 kilómeter climb before dropping into Villa Santa Lucia. This is the biggest challenge of the day.
Once in Santa Lucía, the group splits in 2 hostals, but we have all meals together.
Dinner at Hotel Santa Lucia.
Night at Hotels.
Monday / Day 4: From Villa Santa Lucía over the Andes Crossing to the town of Futaleufú
Breakfast.
Today’s challenge is for another 50 miles of beautiful Patagonia, but a bit more challenging than the day before. The road carves through the mountains with many rivers. We face a rolling road all the way to Futaleufu which makes it tiring. Though there is work on the road (pavement proyect) there are still some good stretches of gravel.
At around 2pm support team will look for a good spot by the road and by the river to set up our lunch station again. So, lunch by the Futaleufú River.
After a well deserved lunch and time to rest, we resume our riding all the way to the town of Futaleufu near the border with Argentina, now on the Estearn side of the Andes Mountains.
The plan is to meet at the main Plaza de Armas, very easy to find to celebrate the challenge and maybe a group picture. After that we ride few blocks to our cabins for 2 nights.
Tonight, people have the chance to explore this small cute border-town.
Dinner ON YOUR OWN.
Night at local Cabins.
Tuesday / Day 5: Bikes & River Float – Raft & kayaks
Breakfast in our cabins.
At 10 we get ready for a full day of action. In the morning we ride through a beutiful aprt of the Futaleufu Valley. We follow the Espolon River, a tributary of the Futaleufu. We pass Valley Noroeste, and then into Valle Bonito almost at the watershed of the Espolon River.
It is time for lunch by the river.
At around 2pm we get ready for a water activity. A mellow but fun float trip of the Espolon River with some small Class II rapids but many options for swimming and relaxing.
By 5pm we return to our cabins with time to clean up and rest.
Dinner together.
Night at local cabins.
Wednesday / Day 6: Custom Paper-work into Argentina. Night in Trevelin.
Breakfast.
At 10am we prepare to leave our cabins and Futaleufu and travel on our bikes to the small town of Travelin in Argentina.
Firstly, we ride 7 miles to customs. We go though international Police and customs at both buildings: Chile and Argentina Custom Buildings.
Once in Argentina, we ride 43 miles through espectacular, though differet scenarios that the days before. As we cross the border, almost instantly, the mountains open up into wide open pampas.
The road combines again dirt and sections with asphalt with gently-rolling hills.
Lunch will happen by the road again.
By 3pm we arrive in Trevelin and check in at out hotel for 1 night.
Time to explore this small town with strong influence from Wales, in the Province of Chubut, Argentine Patagonia. Trevelin was founded by John Daniel Evans in 1891 as a Mill Town – which is what Trevelin means.
A big suggestion is to visit the Mala Cara Museum – Bad Face Museum, in honor to John Danial Evans’ white-faced horse not good for riding in the dark in those dangerous days.
Dinner ON YOUR OWN. Suggestion Local Parrila Restaurant.
Night at Hotel.
Friday / Day 7: Return from Argentina to Futaleufú & ON to Chaiten
Breakfast at Hotel.
at 10am we start riding all the way back to Futaleufú through the same road. We go through customs again to enter Chile and then ride on to Futaleufú for lunch.
By 3pm, we get ready for the 3-hour drive to Chaitén with bikes and gear.
We check in at the same places in Chaitén.
Dinner ON YOUR OWN in Chaitén
NIght at Los Canelos and Las Tranqueras.
Saturday / Day 8: Trip Back to Puerto Montt by Boat
Breakfast at 6:00am.
Today is the day we travel back to Puerto Montt by car but using the same ferry boat to cross the Fjords.
By 11am we need to be embarking – ferry boat schedules might change during our trip.
Lunch on board ON YOUR OWN. Suggestions to bring snacks and water.
Available on board sandwiches – pizzas – sodas – coffee – tea.
Trip ends in Puerto Montt.
